Shinnyo-en Demonstration, Aug 10th, 2008

Thanks to all who took part in the Demonstration at the Shinnyo-en Summer Festival. It was a very successful demo, with many students participating. We had breaking demos, with Sensei Hill breaking river rocks, and Aki, Sasha, and Papken breaking boards. We also did some sparing demos and some basics. The overall result was very impressive. You can see a clip of the action at Nicholas's website:

Summer Campout: June 14, 2008

This Years summer campout was held at Ocean City State Park, on the Washington coast. We had all of the Washington Dojos in attendance, including: Seattle, Bellevue, Ellensburg and Pullman. There were about 40 students in attendance. Most people arrived Friday evening, and most of the night was spent getting settled in and learning how to build fires with green wood. Saturday morning started bright and early at 6 a.m., with the morning calisthenics being led by Sensei Hill, featuring a few trips into the 45 degree ocean, a run on the beach, and the usual push ups and the like. After 2 hours of freezing calisthenics we took a break for breakfast. After everyone had eaten and dried off, the second session began. We trekked back to the beach for a Nunchuck seminar, led by Sensei Cambell. It started with some very basic moves to get the beginners up to speed, and we slowly added more complicated moves, and eventually ended with a couple Nunchuck katas. Around noon we stopped for some lunch and to get off the cold beach and out of the wind to warm up again. After lunch, we resumed with a Self Defense seminar led by Shihan Adams. This seminar featured several displays of throws, in knee deep ocean. Hats off to all of the students who were repeatedly tossed into the water on their backs, or in Yuki's case, face first. This was followed by a trip back to camp to warm up again and dry back off. After a short break, we resumed again with a Bo stick seminar led by Sensei Quitadamo. This followed the same format as the nunchuck seminar, starting simple with the basics and building on that, and ending with a couple katas. This was followed by a well earned dinner. After dinner, the students were done working for the day, and partying ensued. My memory gets a little foggy after that..... Sunday we tended to our headaches and sore muscles, and packed our stuff and came home. It was a great time, with great seminars. Thanks to all who came and especially those who help organize this great campout!
